Swimmer by Ann Wood
2007 38 inches x 22 inches x 8 inches
The Swimmer is a older piece of mine but one I still feel the techniques are current to my work today. Constructed of dyed egg shells, wood, beads, brass, sequins and paint, it's strong mood is somber in one moment yet playful another. The larger female figure strides out in her sequin swim wear caring a delicate basket looking up at the bubble of thoughts of herself as a child all covered up and sad. She has come along way from the history of her past.
As I recall I spent three months constructing this work during a fellowship. Each bead is hand set using tweezers and the egg shells are carefully placed to resemble a water like background.
